Selection #26: Got LIVE If You Want It!
Oh, we want it alright. There’s something special about a great live performance, and that’s what we’ve decided to explore after tossing around ideas for this month’s list:
Give us your favorite spectacular live moments, or live recordings that surpass the original studio cuts — whatever it is, as long as it’s not canned.
Rudi seconded my motion:
My pick would be “Got Live…” if only because September is the last month (for most of the northern hemisphere, anyway) for the big outdoor concerts and live music in all kinds of venues
So give our picks a listen, then check the schedules at your local ampitheaters & clubs and go see a show! I know my next few weeks are packed (The Swell Season, Ben Folds, Amy MacDonald, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, oh my!) — how about you?
- The Man(del) from UNCLE’s “One Night Only… Times Seven”
- Uncle Sam’s “Is it live or is it Memorex? Oh wait — yeah, it’s live.”
- Onkel Rudi’s “All I need is a microphone, a stage, and an audience”
- UNKLE Matt’s “Live And Direct”
Stay tuned later in the month for a second set of lists, one from each of us, focusing on a single band or performer. Hope you dig!

Hi Guys,
Live shows!! Woo hoo! I love ‘em and can’t get eonough of ‘em. I actually spend more money on them than I probably should, but they’re just so much damn fun! This summer we hit the Virgin Festival for the third year. A couple highlights were jumping aroung in the pit for Iggy and the Stooges. When they ended I kept screaming. These two young girls were laughing at me and I kept yelling, “I’m yelling. I’m sorry, but I’m excited!” They laughed more. I’ll try to send you a photo or two I took of Iggy from about 6 feet away. That’s one crazy sestegenarian. Another great unexpected gem were Rodrigo y Gabriella, instrumental acoustic guitar superheroes. Tonight, I’m going to see my buddy Bob Mayo in the not-too-often reunion of Wargasm. On 9/24 we take off for Austin and our second year at ACL. I’m looking forward to another show with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant along with the great T-Bone Burnett. It’s a pretty good line-up this year: David Byrne, Beck, Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, Roky Ericson, Black Keys and a new favorite from last year the Heartless Bastards, who by the way are playing TT’s in Oct. I recommend them highly. They’re a bit of blues (they’re on Fat Possum) and a lot of rock. Erika has a great voice. Those are just some of the bands that I can think of off the top of my head. See you soon!
